Academic Life
Banyan School offers students an individualized academic
program that allows children to learn at their own pace.
Class placement reflects student age and grade level but also considers learning style, social maturity and academic level. Staff and parent collaboration fosters an atmosphere of interaction that allows program modification when appropriate.
A variety of multi-sensory instructional models enable staff members to tailor lessons to student needs. Students experience a total immersion in language based activities throughout the day that are geared to increase comprehension and writing skills. Benchmark, Wilson Reading, Project Read, Lindamood Bell and PCI represent the variety of reading programs available to students. Mathematics courses focus on the acquisition of concepts and operations necessary to achieve a high level of problem solving skills. As with Language Arts and Reading, students are grouped in math dependent upon their strengths.
Banyan School subscribes to the importance of multiple intelligences. Students are encouraged to explore opportunities that encourage personal growth. Throughout the school year students are encouraged to join in club activities that include photography, sports, computer, cooking and sewing. In addition, students are encouraged to join one of the many athletic teams which include basketball, bowling, volleyball and golf.
The goal of the Banyan School is to help students with language based disabilities develop the skills that they need to become strong independent learners and advocates for their own needs.
